How Science Fiction Inspires Social Change
THE CREATION of science fiction cinema has brought us many great and impressive works of art. It can provide us with both entertainment and education. It is a means of spreading information and even gives us insight into our collective subconcious. No matter where the stories are set, they speak to the great issues of our time.
Take Star Trek. The massively successful 1960s TV series was a game changer in.the United States for women's liberation and minority rights. It not only captured the zeigeist of the 1960s, but also put on display the optimistic belief that we could solve the world's problems through the development of technology.
On the other hand, the hard science fiction.of Stanley Kubrick's 1968 classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, took a dark turn on the development of technology. It largely reflected the cold war anxieties of the time and showed audiences a dystopian future controlled by computers. Though it was mere fantasy at the time, the technology has since turned out to be very feasible indeed. For example, one shot shows an astronaut in space speaking with his daughter through video communication. This kindof communication would not become a reality for another 30 years. The true villain of the movie is an AI computer called HAL9000, which was surely one of the inspirations behind the creation of ChatGPT, which has recently made global headlines.
Then came a thaw in the Cold War, and the sunshine over Hollywood expressed itself in the space operas of the 1970s and 80s. This subgenre of science fiction often dealt with shiny superheroes fighting evil aliens with lasers and swords in a battle to save the universe. For all their practical and special effects technology, the plots were often nothing more than elaborate fairy tales.
These days, many sci-fi fans are glad to see the film industry turning their backson those types of adventures in their demand for more serious content. Hence the huge popularity of sci-fi series like The Three-Body Problem and The Wandering Earth. These stories combine adventure with hard science and invlove real-life ordinary characters striving to overcome super-human challenges. While their themes can often be dark, these stories are nonetheless inspirational.
In fact, science fiction has inspired many of today's greatest innovators. For example, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Space X, has spoken about his love of science fiction and how it has come to influence his work. Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, said that he had been influenced by the stories of Isaac Asimov, one of the "Big Three" science fiction writers. For the rest of us, a good science fiction story, while being enormously entertaining, can also.serve to spark an interest in the sciences. In some young hearts, it may even plant the seed for a dream as big as Musk's and Jobs's. |
